Often the council is the right answer. South Tyneside Council will collect up to eight items for £30, and if you can carry them out to the front yourself and wait in for the day, that is good value and we will tell you so. The council also sells its own house and garden clearance, which most people do not know. Here is the honest difference between all four ways of getting rid of it.

When the council will not be able to help
The council's own pages say it plainly. They cannot take doors, kitchen units, bathroom suites, laminate flooring or glass wardrobe doors, and nothing longer than two metres. If you have more than eight items, they send you to a clearance service. And their crews cannot come inside, so a loft, a garage or a shed is yours to empty first.

What does rubbish removal cost in South Shields?
There is no price list, because no two loads are the same. Two things set the price and nothing else does.
We do not give an instant price from a calculator, because a photograph tells us things a form never will. You get one fixed price in writing before anybody sets off.
How much van space it needs
We look at your photos and work out how much of the van your load will take. A few bags is not the same as a full three piece suite.
The run from Gateshead
Our yard is in Gateshead and South Shields is a straight run up the A194. The price covers the journey there and back.
What never changes the price
Stairs do not change it, and neither do back lanes or how long the carrying takes. A tight turn on a Westoe staircase is our problem, not yours. Taking large furniture apart is the only extra, at £20 an item.

We do the carrying
We carry it out, load it, sweep up the worst of it and take it away. You do not lift anything.

Where your rubbish actually ends up
Anything still usable goes to be reused or donated. The rest is sorted and taken to a licensed transfer station, and we keep the paperwork. Our licence number is CBDU523317 and it is Upper Tier, which is the level councils ask for. You can look it up yourself on the Environment Agency public register, and we would rather you did.
Reused or donated
Furniture in good condition, white goods that still work and anything a charity can sell. We do not buy anything from you and we do not pay cash.
Sorted and recycled
Metal, wood, cardboard and green waste are separated and go for recycling rather than to landfill.
Licensed disposal
The rest goes to a licensed transfer station, and we keep the transfer notes. Ask and we will send you a copy.

Questions about rubbish removal in South Tyneside
Is it cheaper than the council?
Not if you have eight items or fewer and you can carry them out to the front yourself. The council charges £30 for that and it is good value. We are the better option when there is more than eight items, when something is too heavy or awkward to move, when it is a kitchen or a bathroom coming out, or when nobody is able to do the carrying.
How do I get rubbish removed from my home in South Tyneside?
Two ways. Book a bulky waste collection with South Tyneside Council on 0191 427 7000 or through their website, put the items out by 7.30am and wait in. Or send us photos, take the fixed price, and we come inside and carry it out on a slot you choose.
Is there any free rubbish removal in South Shields?
Not for general rubbish. The council's tip at the Recycling Village is free if you can get there yourself, and a charity will often collect furniture that is still in good condition for nothing. If what you have is genuinely reusable, we will tell you that rather than charge you to take it.
What is the cheapest way to get rid of a lot of rubbish?
If you can load it and drive it yourself, the tip is the cheapest. If you cannot, it is a straight choice between a skip and a van. A skip is usually cheaper for heavy building waste. A van is usually cheaper for household rubbish and furniture, and there is no permit and nothing sitting on your drive for a week.
Do you need to come and look first?
No. The photos are the visit. That is the whole point of doing it this way, and it is why you get a price the same day rather than waiting for somebody to call round.
Can you come the same day?
Often, yes. Send photos early in the day. If you accept the price and we have a slot free we will come the same day. It depends on what is already booked, so it is not a promise for every job.
Do I have to be in?
Not always. If everything is in the back lane, the yard or the garage we can often collect without you there, as long as we have agreed the price and the access first. A lot of our landlord work in South Shields is done this way.
What will you not take?
Asbestos, paint, chemicals, gas bottles, tyres and fridges with the gas still in them need specialist disposal, so we cannot put them in the van. Tell us if you have any of those and we will point you to who can.
