Gateshead homes
Gateshead runs from the flats above the river out to the villages in the Derwent valley. The homes are very different from one end of the borough to the other. These are the four kinds of property we clear most often.
These are the upstairs and downstairs flats that each have their own front door, and Bensham, Saltwell and Felling are full of them. The stairs in an upper flat are narrow and there is usually a tight turn at the bottom. We take doors off their hinges and take beds and wardrobes apart when we need to.
On a lot of Gateshead streets the back lane is the only place to park a van, and we load from there all the time. The council dealt with 2,117 fly tipping incidents in Gateshead back lanes last year. We make sure nothing of yours is left behind when we go. Let us know if your lane is gated or shared with neighbours and we will plan the day around it.
Wrekenton, Deckham, Chowdene, Low Fell and Windy Nook are mostly semis and ex council houses, and a lot of them have a garden and a garage as well. We can clear the house, the loft, the garage and the shed in the same visit.
Whickham, Blaydon, Ryton, Crawcrook, Rowlands Gill and Chopwell sit further out, and some of them are down steep or narrow lanes. We know those roads and we bring a van that will fit. Tell us if access is tight and we will plan the day around it.
The council option
Gateshead Council will collect large items from your home for a fee, and sometimes that is the better choice. If you have two or three big things and you can get them onto the pavement yourself, the council will cost you less than we will. If you need a whole property emptying, their service is not built for that.

There is a minimum charge of £17. After that a large item costs £45.70, a medium item costs £8.50 and a small item costs £2.10. A corner sofa is charged at £8.20 for each section. A sofa, a bed, a wardrobe and a washing machine count as four medium items, which comes to £34.

Your price comes down to two things. The first is how many van loads your things fill, and the second is how far we have to travel. Our yard is on Ropery Road in Gateshead, so for most of the borough the travel costs you almost nothing. Stairs, back lanes and how long the job takes us do not change the price at all.
A one bedroom flat is usually one van load, and a three bedroom semi with a loft and a garage is often two or three. Send us a photo of each room and a member of our team will work out one fixed price for the whole job.

After we collect
Anything still in good condition is donated where we can find a home for it. Everything else goes to a licensed waste site where it is sorted for recycling. We are a registered waste carrier, number CBDU523317. Gateshead Council tells residents to check that number on the Environment Agency register before letting anyone take their things away, so please do.
If we find photographs, letters, jewellery or paperwork while we are working, we stop and put them to one side for you.
Gateshead has two household waste and recycling centres, one on Cowen Road in Blaydon and one at Campground on Springwell Road in Wrekenton. From April to September both open from 9am to 6pm every day. From October to March they open 9am to 5pm on weekdays and 9am to 6pm at weekends. They close only on Christmas Day.
There is more to it than turning up. You have to book a 30 minute slot online first, and you cannot walk in, so you need a vehicle. A car is fine, but a van, a pickup or anything towing a trailer needs a free permit, and you are only allowed twelve permits a year. Box vans, flatbed trucks and any van towing a trailer are not allowed at all. For a house full of furniture that is a lot of booked trips.

The price covers a team to carry everything out of any room in the house, including the loft, the garage and an upper flat. It covers loading the van wherever we can park, and taking everything to a licensed site where it is sorted for recycling. Taking large furniture apart is £20 an item. Cleaning the property afterwards is not included, so please tell us if you need that as well.
Most homes in Gateshead are cleared in a single day. A very full house, or one where the loft, the garage and the shed all need doing as well, can take two. We will tell you how long we think yours will take when we send you the price.

Yes, and it is one of the jobs we do most often in Bensham, Saltwell and Felling. If a sofa will not fit round the turn at the bottom of the stairs, we take the doors off their hinges. We also take beds and wardrobes apart when we need to. Please tell us it is an upper flat when you send your photos so that we bring the right size of team.
No, we do not do either of those. We are a paid clearance service rather than a buyer. Some firms in Gateshead offer a free clearance and keep the contents instead of charging you, which can suit a house full of things worth selling, and a local charity will sometimes collect a few reusable items at no cost. If you think something is valuable, please sell it or get it valued before we arrive. Anything you leave behind that is still in good condition will be donated where we can.
There are a few things we are not allowed to carry. We cannot take paint, chemicals, gas bottles or asbestos, and that includes the asbestos sheeting you still find on some older garage and shed roofs. If any of those are in the property, please tell us when you send your photos and we will point you towards somebody who can deal with them. Everything else in a normal house is fine, including fridges, freezers, televisions, mattresses and carpets.
