What we take away

The jobs we do most often in Gateshead

Gateshead is home. Our yard is on Ropery Road, so this is the one place where there is no journey to price in and no waiting for a van to come across the river. Most of what we take away here falls into one of these four.

Loads you cannot itemise

A garage, a loft or a yard with a bit of everything in it. This is exactly the case where the council asks for £30 to send a supervisor out to look. We price it from photographs for nothing.

Rubble and garden waste

The council will not take it loose, so it has to be bagged or bundled first. We take it as it is, including soil, hardcore and a patio that has come up.

Single heavy items

A fridge freezer, a washing machine, a mattress or a sofa from an upstairs flat in Bensham or Felling. One item is a job as far as we are concerned.

Landlords and end of tenancy

Whatever the last tenant left behind. Send photos, take the fixed price, and we can collect with keys if you are not local.

The council option

Should you just use the council?

For a tidy list of items, the council is cheaper and we will say so. A few small things at £2.10 each, or a sofa at £8.50, is hard to beat. Two things are worth knowing before you book. There is a £17 minimum, so one washing machine costs £17 rather than the £2.10 on the list. And if you cannot itemise the load, there is a £30 charge just to get a price.

Council prices and rules read from gateshead.gov.uk on 20 September 2026. Bookings go through Customer Services on 0191 433 7000, open 8am to 5pm Monday to Friday. Check the figures before you book, because they change.

Try giving it away first

Before you pay anybody, the council suggests retailer take-back schemes, giving items away on Freecycle, Freegle or a local group, or donating to a charity such as Foundations Furniture. If your photos show something still worth having, we will tell you the same thing.

The difference worth knowing

The council charges £30 to come and look. We charge nothing.

Gateshead Council charges a £30 non-refundable fee for a supervisor to come out and quote, and that applies exactly when you have the kind of mixed load most people ring us about. If you go ahead with the collection the £30 comes off the final bill. If you do not, it is gone.

We do not charge to look, because we do not come and look. You photograph what needs to go on your phone, a person on the team reads the photos, and you get one fixed price in writing. There is no visit, no fee and usually no wait beyond the same day.

What to check before you book the council

  • £30 to be quoted, and you lose it if you do not book
  • A £17 minimum whatever the headline item price says
  • Two to ten working days, longer at bank holidays
  • Items out by 7.30am or it counts as fly tipping
  • Miss a condition and you pay for a second collection
  • Loose rubble and garden waste must be bagged first

Why being local matters here

Our yard is on Ropery Road in Gateshead, so we are not travelling to get here. Our licence is CBDU523317, Upper Tier, and you can look it up on the Environment Agency register.

Straight pricing

What does rubbish removal cost in Gateshead?

There is no price list, because no two loads are the same. Two things set the price and nothing else does.

1

How much van space it needs

A few bags is not the same as a full three piece suite. Your photos tell us which.

2

No run at all

Our yard is on Ropery Road, inside the borough. There is no travel to price in, which is why Gateshead jobs are often the quickest we do.

What never changes the price

Stairs do not change it, and neither do back lanes or how long the carrying takes. Taking large furniture apart is the only extra, at £20 an item.

How it works

Four steps, and no visit before the price

Same day collection is available when we have a slot free. It is not a promise for every job, and we will tell you straight away if we cannot do it.

  1. 1

    Send photos

Photograph everything that needs to go, including the yard, the loft and the back lane. Phone photos are fine.

  2. 2

    A person prices it

Somebody on the team looks at the photos and works out the van space. You get one fixed price in writing, not an estimate.

  3. 3

    Pick a day

You choose a slot between 8am and 8pm, seven days a week. Same day when we have one free.

  4. 4

    We do the carrying

We carry it out, load it, sweep up the worst of it and take it away. You do not lift anything.

Where it goes

Where your rubbish actually ends up

Reused or donated

Furniture in good condition and white goods that still work. We do not buy anything from you and we do not pay cash.

Sorted and recycled

Metal, wood, cardboard and green waste are separated and go for recycling rather than to landfill.

Licensed disposal

The rest goes to a licensed transfer station and we keep the transfer notes. Ask and we will send you a copy.

Great workers, two houses worth of things dropped off in less than half a day. Friendly and helpful staff. Took perfect care with the furniture. Would definitely use this company again.

Questions

Questions about rubbish removal in Gateshead

How much does Gateshead Council charge to collect rubbish?

There is a minimum charge of £17. On top of that, large items are £45.70 each, medium items such as a sofa or a fridge are £8.50, and small items such as a microwave or a bag of household rubbish are £2.10. Because of the minimum, one small item still costs £17.

Does the council charge to give me a quote?

Yes, if you cannot itemise what needs collecting. The council charges £30, which it describes as non-refundable, for a supervisor to visit and price the job. It comes off the final bill if you go ahead. We do not charge anything to price a job from photographs.

How long does a council collection take to come?

The council says usually between 2 and 10 working days, and longer around bank holidays. Items go out by 7.30am on the day and collection is any time up to 3.30pm.

Will the council come inside the house?

Only if you are unable to move the items outdoors yourself. You need to be in between 7.30am and 3.30pm, you should cover your own carpets, and the council says it will not accept responsibility for damage where reasonable steps have not been taken to protect the property.

Is a skip cheaper in Gateshead?

For heavy building waste a skip often is, and you keep it for days. A van usually works out better for household rubbish and furniture, because there is no permit, nothing sitting on your drive and you are not doing the loading.

Why should I use you instead of the council?

For a short list of items, you probably should not, and we will tell you that. We are worth it when the load is mixed, when it is loose rubble or garden waste the council will not take as it is, when you do not want to wait up to ten working days, or when you would rather not carry it out yourself.

Can you come the same day?

Often, yes. Send photos early in the day. If you accept the price and we have a slot free we will come the same day. Being based in Gateshead helps here more than anywhere else we work.

What will you not take?

Asbestos, paint, chemicals, gas bottles, tyres and fridges with the gas still in them need specialist disposal, so we cannot put them in the van. Tell us if you have any of those and we will point you to who can.
