What we take away

The jobs we do most often in North Shields

North Tyneside has more ways to get rid of things free than anywhere else we work, and we will point you at them first. What we are for is the load that does not fit any of them. Rubble, a mixed clear-out, or anything you need gone this week rather than after an inspection.

Rubble and building waste

The council will not take bricks, plasterboard, flagstones, soil or tiles at all. A bathroom rip-out or a patio that has come up is an ordinary job for us.

Mixed clear-outs

A garage, a loft or a yard with a bit of everything in it. The council may need an inspection to price that, which it says can take up to seven days. We price it from photos.

Flats and seafront properties

North Shields, Tynemouth and Whitley Bay have a lot of upper flats and converted seafront houses with one shared staircase. We take doors off hinges and furniture apart where we need to.

Landlords and end of tenancy

Wallsend, North Shields and Whitley Bay all have a steady turnover of lets. Send photos, take the fixed price, and we can collect with keys if you are not local.

The council option

Try the council first. Here is where it stops.

Try the free routes first and we will help you find them. If your furniture is still good, clean and reusable, Renew North Tyneside will collect it for nothing. Council tenants get two free bulky collections a year. And the tip is free for household waste. What follows is for everything those three cannot take.

Renew North Tyneside will take good furniture for nothing

Renew North Tyneside is run by the council with SUEZ and North Tyneside Big Local. It takes household furniture that is in good condition, clean, reusable and still has its fire safety labels. Email recycle@northtyneside.gov.uk to ask. The council notes that photos of the items may be needed to check the condition, which is the same way we price a job.

The bit that catches people out

A mixed load can take a week just to get priced

This is the part that catches people out. If your load is a mixture of things rather than a tidy list of items, North Tyneside Council says it may need to book an inspection before it can price the collection, and that this can take up to seven days.

The free tip is not instant either. Everyone visiting the Household Waste Recycling Centre needs a booked appointment, and some vehicles including vans need a permit. When we looked at the booking page it was showing no slots left for that day.

Where the free and cheap routes slow down

  • A mixed load may need an inspection, up to seven days
  • The tip needs a booked appointment for everyone
  • Vans need a permit at the tip
  • Scrap men may take items off the kerb first
  • No refund after 12 noon the day before
  • No rubble, soil, plasterboard or tiles at all

What we do instead

We price from photographs, usually the same day, and there is no inspection and no appointment. Our licence is CBDU523317, Upper Tier, and you can look it up on the Environment Agency register.

Straight pricing

What does rubbish removal cost in North Shields?

There is no price list, because no two loads are the same. Two things set the price and nothing else does.

1

How much van space it needs

A few bags is not the same as a full three piece suite. Your photos tell us which.

2

The run to the coast

Our yard is in Gateshead and the coast road out to North Shields is a short run. The price covers the journey there and back.

What never changes the price

Stairs do not change it, and neither do back lanes or how long the carrying takes. Taking large furniture apart is the only extra, at £20 an item.

How it works

Four steps, and no visit before the price

Same day collection is available when we have a slot free. It is not a promise for every job, and we will tell you straight away if we cannot do it.

  1. 1

    Send photos

Photograph everything that needs to go, including the yard, the loft and the back lane. Phone photos are fine.

  2. 2

    A person prices it

Somebody on the team looks at the photos and works out the van space. You get one fixed price in writing, not an estimate.

  3. 3

    Pick a day

You choose a slot between 8am and 8pm, seven days a week. Same day when we have one free.

  4. 4

    We do the carrying

We carry it out, load it, sweep up the worst of it and take it away. You do not lift anything.

Where it goes

Where your rubbish actually ends up

Reused or donated

Furniture in good condition and white goods that still work. We do not buy anything from you and we do not pay cash.

Sorted and recycled

Metal, wood, cardboard and green waste are separated and go for recycling rather than to landfill.

Licensed disposal

The rest goes to a licensed transfer station and we keep the transfer notes. Ask and we will send you a copy.

What customers say

5 out of 5 stars. 5.0 on Google from 172 reviews

Absolutely excellent service. Syed and Adam were incredibly polite and uncomplaining even when a large sofa which had originally been delivered in the lift refused to go back in. Without any hesitation they immediately proceeded to haul it down 3 flights of stairs. Thankyou

Two hard working lads and me being disabled put sofas exactly where I needed them to save me struggling to move them. Highly recommend

Questions

Questions about rubbish removal in North Tyneside

How much does North Tyneside Council charge to collect rubbish?

At the time of writing it is £15 for a large item such as a sofa or a mattress, and £55 for a heavy one such as a bathroom suite or a dismantled shed. Small items are £15 for up to six, £30 for seven to twelve, £45 for thirteen to eighteen and £55 beyond that. It is booked through the Envirolink team on 0345 2000 103.

Is there free rubbish removal in North Tyneside?

There are three free routes and we would rather you used them if they fit. Renew North Tyneside collects household furniture that is still good, clean and reusable. Council tenants get two free bulky collections a year. And the tip takes household waste for nothing, although you need a booked appointment.

Do I need to book a slot at the tip?

Yes. The council says everyone visiting the Household Waste Recycling Centre needs an appointment, and some vehicles including vans need a permit. Slots do run out, so check before you load the car.

Why would I pay when the council is cheaper?

For a single sofa you probably would not, and we will say so. We are worth it when you have rubble or building waste the council will not take at all, when the load is mixed enough that the council would want an inspection, or when you need it gone this week rather than after a wait.

What will the council not take?

No bricks, block paving, flagstones, gravel, plasterboard, rubble, soil, tiles, windows or glass doors. That is most of what comes out of a renovation, and it is the main reason people ring us here.

Do you need to come and look first?

No. The photos are the visit. That is why you get a price the same day rather than waiting for an inspection to be booked.

Can you come the same day?

Often, yes. Send photos early in the day. If you accept the price and we have a slot free we will come the same day. It depends on what is already booked, so it is not a promise for every job.

What will you not take?

Asbestos, paint, chemicals, gas bottles, tyres and fridges with the gas still in them need specialist disposal, so we cannot put them in the van. Tell us if you have any of those and we will point you to who can.
